How Poor Circulation Can Affect the Feet

Do your feet feel cold—even when it is not cold outside— or numb? Have you noticed that your feet look white, red, blue, or purple at times? If so, you may have poor circulation in your feet. This condition develops when the blood vessels that deliver a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients to the feet through blood constrict or harden. Other symptoms of poor circulation include a loss of hair on the feet or legs, foot or ankle wounds that have trouble healing, cracked or dry skin, and weak toenails. Poor circulation in the feet may be caused by various underlying conditions. Raynaud’s disease can cause spasms in blood vessels and a decrease in the amount of blood to the toes. Constricting blood vessels can sometimes be attributed to acrocyanosis, which may turn the toes blue and make your skin feel cold and clammy. Many people with diabetes suffer from poor circulation due to elevated blood sugar levels. This is particularly dangerous, as this condition can make it difficult for the diabetic to detect wounds. High blood pressure can lead to arteriosclerosis, which can cause arteries to harden and restrict blood flow. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a buildup of plaque in the arteries, which also restricts blood flow. Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness   
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs 
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. Will Wearing Flip Flops Damage My Feet?

People often wear flip-flops in summer and warmer weather. These shoes often feel comfortable, but if worn too much and for long periods of time they can cause foot and body problems. The lack of support in flip-flops can lead to issues with foot arches and heels, including painful plantar fasciitis – an inflammation of the fascia on the bottom of the foot. Long-term pain in foot arches and heels can further lead to bone spurs or impact the way one walks, which can cause further problems with the knees, hips, and the back to develop. If pain in the feet results from wearing such shoes, a visit to a podiatrist is suggested to halt or treat serious issues from developing.

Your Feet are the Body’s Workhorse

The main job of the many bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons of the foot is to get you where you want to go. When you take a step, and most of us do this without really thinking about it, the heel touches the ground and absorbs some of the force. The muscles in the sole of the foot then give way, and the band of tissue beneath (plantar fascia) stretches out. Next, your weight shifts to the ball of the foot, and finally the toes push off the surface. Your weight is now fully on the foot, and you start the process again with the other foot. You can do several things to keep your feet operating as they should: A) Wear shoes that fit properly, have plenty of room in the toe box, and have low heels; B) Maintain a healthy body weight; and C) go for walks regularly to keep the foot muscles strong and flexible. Types of Metatarsal Fractures

The metatarsals are the five long bones located in the middle of your foot which connect the toes to the rest of the foot. When any of these bones break, it is known as a metatarsal fracture. There are several types of metatarsal fractures. Stress fractures occur when a bone develops one or more tiny cracks due to it being unable to bear the load placed on it. A Lisfranc fracture-dislocation occurs when the second metatarsal bone is broken and knocked out of place. A fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone, the most common type of metatarsal fracture, occurs when excessive stress or overuse causes the bone that connects your pinky toe to the rest of your foot to break. If you have symptoms of a broken foot bone, such as pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking or bearing weight on the injured foot, it is strongly suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist as soon as possible.
