What Are Some Common Running Injuries?

Did you know that many runners are sidelined by injuries each year? Common injuries to the feet and ankles, such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, ankle sprains, and foot fractures, often affect runners. A combination of factors, including anatomical issues, wearing the wrong shoes, or training incorrectly, can lead to a painful injury. To help avoid running injuries, it is suggested that you stretch and strengthen your feet and ankles, find shoes that fit the biomechanics of your feet, and increase the mileage, intensity, and duration of your runs slowly over time. For more information about preventing foot and ankle injuries caused by running, please consult with a podiatrist.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Gregory Rorick, DPM of Rorick Podiatry, PC. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

Many common running injuries are caused by overuse and overtraining. When the back of the kneecap starts wearing out and starts causing pain in your knee, this is commonly referred to as runner’s knee. Runner’s knee is a decrease in strength in your quadriceps and can occur if you’re not wearing properly fitted or supporting shoes. To prevent runner’s knee, focusing on hip strengthening is a good idea, as well as strengthening your quads to keep the kneecaps aligned.

What Are Some Causes of Running Injuries?
- One cause of a common running injury is called iliotibial band syndrome.
- Plantar fasciitis is also another common injury.
- Stress fractures can occur from overtraining, lack of calcium, or even your running style.

Best Ways to Prevent Running Injuries
- Wear footwear that fits properly and suits your running needs.
- Running shoes are the only protective gear that runners have to safeguard them from injury.
- Make a training schedule. Adding strengthening exercises as well as regular stretching can help keep you strong and limber and can lessen the possibility of injuries.
- Stretching keeps muscles limber; this will help you gain better flexibility.

Grade 2 Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments of the ankle are overstretched or torn during an injury. Sprains vary in severity, from mild Grade 1 sprains to severe Grade 3 sprains. A Grade 2 sprain is considered to be moderate and is characterized by some, but not all, of the ligament fibers being torn. The affected ankle and foot are often painful and moderately bruised or swollen, but the stability of the ankle joint is generally not affected. Grade 2 ankle sprains may require four to six weeks to heal fully. It is typically suggested that you avoid any activities that put extra strain on the injured ligaments for at least a month following the initial injury. If you have sprained your ankle, please see a podiatrist for treatment.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact Gregory Rorick, DPM from Rorick Podiatry, PC. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Who Is at Risk for Gout?

Gout is characterized by the sudden onset of severe pain, swelling, tenderness, redness, and warmth in a joint, and it typically affects the joints of the feet. The big toe’s joint is a particularly common site for gout. Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. This substance can crystallize and accumulate in the joints, leading to painful gout flare ups. The people who are most at risk for developing this condition include men over the age of 40, postmenopausal women, those with a family history of gout, and those who consume meat, seafood, and alcohol. If you have gout that affects your feet or ankles, please consult with a podiatrist.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Gregory Rorick, DPM from Rorick Podiatry, PC. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

What Is Limb Salvage Surgery?

Limb salvage surgery is a surgical procedure designed to prevent amputation of a limb. The main goal of this surgery is to save the limb, restore or improve its function, and help the patient return to their daily activities. Certain conditions may endanger your lower extremities and require surgery to prevent amputation of the affected limb. Specific types of bone fractures, advanced diabetic wounds, infections, cancers, frostbite, and poor circulation may need surgical intervention to save the affected limb. For more information about limb salvage surgery as it pertains to the lower extremities, please consult with a podiatrist.

Limb salvage can be an effective way in preventing the need for limb amputation. If you have diabetes, cancer, or any other condition that could lead to foot amputation if left unchecked, consult with Gregory Rorick, DPM from Rorick Podiatry, PC. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Limb Salvage?

Limb salvage is the attempt of saving a limb, such as the foot from amputation. Podiatrists also try to make sure that there is enough function in the foot after the salvage that it is still usable. Diabetes is the number one cause of non-traumatic amputations in the United States. Those with diabetes experience poor blood circulation, which prevents proper healing of an ulcer. If the ulcer is left uncheck, it could become infected, which could result in the need for amputation.

However, there are other causes as well, such as cancer and traumatic injury. Links between higher mortality rates and amputation have been found. This translates into higher healthcare costs, and a reduced quality of life and mobility for amputees. Podiatrists have attempted to increase the prevalence of limb salvage in an attempt to solve these issues.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Limb salvage teams have grown in recent years that utilize a number of different treatments to save the infected limb. This includes podiatrists that specialize in wound care, rehabilitation, orthotics, and surgery. Through a combination of these methods, limb salvage has been found to be an effective treatment for infected limbs, and as an alternative to amputation. Podiatrists will first evaluate the potential for limb salvage and determine if the limb can be saved or must be amputated.

Research has indicated that daily foot care is essential in possibly preventing unpleasant foot conditions. Some of these conditions can include cracked heels and calluses. It is beneficial to wash your feet daily, followed by drying them thoroughly. Additionally, it may help to exfoliate and lather them with a good moisturizer. Some patients apply cuticle oil to the edge of the toenails, as this can help to keep the overall foot smooth. Performing weekly  buffing routines and monthly peels or foot soaks are necessary in keeping the feet looking their best. If you would like additional information about how to perform everyday foot care routines, please consult with a podiatrist.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Gregory Rorick, DPM from Rorick Podiatry, PC. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.
